Can Pumpkins Survive Houston Heat? Here’s What We’ve Learned

Houston fall is lovely. It is also not always what the rest of the country would call “fall.”

While friends in Nebraska may already be reaching for jackets, we can still be enjoying warm afternoons, sunshine, humidity, and the occasional surprise rainstorm. So it is a perfectly fair question:

Can pumpkins actually survive Houston heat?

The short answer is yes—with a little smart placement and care.

At Blue Cottage Porch, we bring pumpkins down from Nebraska and use them to create displays throughout the Houston area every season. We have learned that pumpkins can hold up beautifully here, but they appreciate a little help when our version of fall decides to feel like summer.

The Biggest Challenge Is Heat Plus Moisture

Pumpkins do not love extreme heat, but heat alone is not usually the whole story.

What causes the most trouble is a combination of hot sun, high humidity, standing moisture, and sprinklers hitting the same pumpkin day after day. Once a pumpkin gets soft or develops a damaged spot, moisture can speed up the deterioration.

That does not mean your porch has to be completely shaded or that you cannot enjoy pumpkins until the weather cools down. It simply means placement matters. A covered porch, shaded entry, or spot protected from constant afternoon sun gives pumpkins their best chance to look beautiful longer. Displays along walkways, under trees, and around front steps can work wonderfully, too—especially when they are not sitting in wet grass or being sprayed by the irrigation system every morning.

A Few Simple Things Make a Big Difference

You do not need to fuss over your porch pumpkins every day. A few easy habits go a long way.

First, keep them as dry as possible. If your sprinklers hit the porch, walkway, or planting beds, adjust them if you can so they do not soak the pumpkins. After a heavy rain, it is helpful to check that pumpkins are not sitting in a puddle or against wet mulch.

If pumpkins are placed in grass, dirt, or a flower bed, giving them a small barrier underneath can help protect them from moisture. Bricks, pavers, or even paper plates can create a little separation between the pumpkin and damp ground.

And as tempting as it may be, always carry pumpkins from the bottom—not by the stem. A pretty stem is one of our favorite details, but it is not a handle.

Some Pumpkins Are Better Suited for Display

Not every pumpkin is exactly the same, and that is part of what makes a Blue Cottage Porch display interesting.

Classic orange jack-o’-lantern pumpkins bring warmth and abundance. White pumpkins brighten an arrangement. Cinderellas, specialty varieties, and unusual gourds add beautiful shapes and textures that make a porch feel layered and intentional.

When we create a display, we think about more than color. We also look at condition, shape, placement, and which pumpkins will work best together in your particular space. Larger pumpkins may anchor the display in more protected spots, while smaller pumpkins and gourds can add detail around the edges.

It is not a perfect science—Houston weather always gets a vote—but thoughtful placement makes a difference.

What If a Pumpkin Starts to Soften?

A pumpkin may occasionally get a soft spot, especially after sustained heat, rain, or sprinkler exposure. If you notice one starting to deteriorate, moving it away from the others can help protect the rest of the display.

If you purchased your display from Blue Cottage Porch, please reach out to us. We offer a 7-day replacement guarantee because we want you to enjoy your porch—not worry about it.

We cannot control the weather, but we can stand behind the pumpkins we install.

Houston Fall Is Still Pumpkin Season

The truth is, Houston does not need crisp air and sweaters for a porch to feel like fall.

A beautiful pumpkin display changes the mood of a home immediately. It makes the entry feel welcoming, gives the kids something fun to come home to, and turns even a warm October afternoon into a little bit of autumn.

With good placement, a little protection from moisture, and a watchful eye on sprinklers, your pumpkins can absolutely thrive through Houston’s version of fall.

And if you would rather leave the planning, hauling, arranging, and pumpkin-care questions to us, that is exactly what Blue Cottage Porch is here for.
